GUEST POST BY STEPHANIE BERGET–WHO DOESN’T LOVE A COWBOY?

With the premier of Outlander, Scottish Highlanders in kilts are all the rage right now. But for just a moment, I’d like to turn your attention to cowboys in Wranglers.

Having spent most of my life living in the northwest, training barrel racing horses and competing in rodeos, setting my first romance novel in central Oregon on a ranch seemed the only thing to do.

Besides, cowboys are hot. We all know that, right? And since I’m married to a cowboy who was a champion rough stock rider in his younger days and now trains team roping horses, I didn’t have to look farther than my living room to find a model for my heroes.

What do you think of when you see the word cowboy? Ranch hand, rodeo cowboy or old west gunfighter? Do you admire their strength and honesty, their love of animals or even how they look in a pair of tight Wranglers? That last one works for me.

A cowboy, whether one hundred years ago or present day, cares for his horse and dog before himself, no matter how hungry or tired he is at the end of the day. He helps a neighbor or a complete stranger without a second thought, and no matter the weather, he watches out for his cattle.

And he uses the same care with his woman. That last one is what makes the cowboy a perfect hero whether in a contemporary novel or a historical set in the old West. There’s nothing better than being the center of a cowboy’s attention.

Which real life cowboy would you choose to be your hero? Who’s you favorite cowboy book boyfriend?
