Welcome Historical Romance Writer Author Clair Brett!!
Let’s learn about her life-
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I always loved writing and as an only child, I was very good at entertaining myself with long epic stories in my head, but it wasn’t until after I was teaching, mothering, and housewifing that I got back into reading and realized Hey, I could do that. I don’t think I ever thought that I could choose “writer” as a career until then.
How long does it take you to write a book?
My first book I worked on, on and off for more years than I would like to admit, but I was learning. I spend a lot of time with the characters in my head. Many of my stories have been ideas for a very long time, so when I sit down to write the first draft can come together in five or six months, but then it goes through many, many revisions before it goes to my editor.
What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
I work from home doing freelance editing and content writing, so when I am working on a book, I try to keep to a schedule of 1500-2000 words a day and I like to get it finished early during my desk time before kids come home, and chores scream at me. I find if I break up my day, I don’t get burned out on any one project.
Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
I write historicals, so sometimes I will be doing research for one story and read something interesting and it will spark an idea, but more often, I see something on the news, or see two things together in a new way. Many of my plot or character ideas for my historicals come from very contemporary things. I am a firm believer that human nature will always overcome society, so that frees me to challenge the Regency strictures somewhat because there is always someone who is willing to go against the grain.
What does your family think of your writing?
When my mother was alive, she thought I was very talented, but wasn’t sure I should spend so much time on a hobby. Lol. My husband and daughters are very supportive. My girls who are almost all grown up may be a little embarrassed about mom writing love scenes. We don’t discuss it.
How many books have you written? Do you have a favorite?
I have two published novels in my Improper Wives for Proper Lords series. Dealing with the Viscount and An Heiress by Midnight and I am currently working on book three, which if I can pull it off will be my most outrageous plot and heroine yet. I also have the “book under the bed” which I will, at some point, pull out and clean up. They are my favorite couple because I spent so much time with them way back when.
Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
I have only been published for a little less than a year, but I have heard from a few readers who love my strong, take-no-prisoners heroines. I would love to hear from more readers so find me on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/AuthorClairBrett/ !
